When cleaning stops fixing the vent

Clothes still damp after a full cycle. Laundry room hotter than the rest of the house. A burning smell, or the dryer shutting off on its thermal limit. If a cleaning fixed that last year and barely helps now, the duct itself is the problem, not the lint.

Vinyl and thin foil flex are the usual culprits. Both sag. Both hold lint in every ridge. They should be rigid metal. Behind pedestal washer and dryer sets the transition duct is often crushed flat against the wall. The fix there is a short rigid run and a periscope fitting, not more flex.

Long vertical runs in 1990s-2000s two-story tract homes fail differently. Lint and dust mat up in the elbows at the base. Roof-cap screens and louvers block with lint plus wind-driven dust. Screened caps come off and proper louvered terminations go on. On snowbird homes sitting empty, birds and rodents get into damaged caps and the top section gets replaced outright.

Garage-corner dryers vent sideways through stucco, so that penetration has to be sealed correctly. Condo and townhome closets routed through soffit or a shared chase limit rerouting. Past manufacturer length, a booster fan may be the only option.

If your duct is already rigid, sealed, and dirty, replacement is wasted money. Clean it and recheck in 12–18 months.
